Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Gail McLaughlin, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Aura, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Helping New Residents Feel Seen and Valued

A successful move-in experience begins when a new resident feels seen, valued, and excited to be part of the community. At Aura, that means creating a welcome that feels personal, warm, and grounded in connection from the very beginning.

Resident Ambassadors help make that possible by preparing thoughtfully before new neighbors arrive. During monthly meetings, the Resident Services Director shares as much information as appropriate with the ambassadors so they can understand who is moving in and how they may be able to help.

Those meetings also create a plan for follow-through. Ambassadors decide who will take specific action steps, such as introducing themselves, extending meal invitations, inviting new residents to events, or becoming a familiar point of contact. This preparation helps new residents feel supported as they begin learning the rhythm of community life.

Making Room at the Table

Some of the most meaningful welcomes at Aura happen through simple, everyday invitations. Resident Ambassadors introduce themselves, invite new residents to dine with them, and encourage them to attend events together. They also serve as a helpful resource when a new resident has questions.

One meaningful example can often be seen at breakfast. Many of Aura’s ambassadors eat together and invite new residents to join them. At times, they have even pushed multiple tables together to make sure everyone has a seat. It is a beautiful reminder of the community’s philosophy: the company makes the feast.

That kind of welcome helps a new resident feel included right away. It says there is room for them, not only at the table, but in the life of the community.

Residents often respond quickly to other residents because peer connection feels relatable. Fellow residents understand the experience of living in the community in a way that is different from staff. Their encouragement can feel natural, comfortable, and easy to accept.

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of Aura by creating prompt friendships and haring helpful insight. Offering dining and event companionship also fosters a strong sense of belonging. Through peer-to-peer support, they help ease the transition into community life and remind new residents that they already have people ready to welcome them in.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
