Building Connection Through Community

Category: Senior Living

Author: Gail Mclaughlin, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at Aura Independent Living, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community can transform senior living. It turns a place to stay into a place to thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood isn’t just helpful — it is essential for well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating a Community That Feels Like Home

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, each moment strengthens relationships. These experiences help residents feel like they truly belong.

Every interaction becomes a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully. They also benefit from the emotional comfort that comes with genuine human connection.

To me, community means creating a place where every person feels they belong. It is a space where people are seen, heard, valued, and cared for. Strong connections are essential, especially because loneliness often leads to depression. Meaningful relationships help residents feel supported and uplifted.

Strengthening Connections Inside and Beyond Aura

I encourage residents to engage with one another through social experiences that build friendships. Shared moments help people grow closer. I also strengthen our connection to nearby towns through acts of service, community outings, and by welcoming local partners into Aura.

One of my favorite events is our Iowa Hawkeye Football tailgating celebration. It is full of energy, fun conversations, and laughter. Events like this bring people together in a powerful way.

To help new residents feel welcome, I check in with them often and personally invite them to events. I introduce them to neighbors I believe they will connect with. These simple steps help new residents feel at home from the very beginning.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every shared laugh, conversation, and meaningful moment enriches daily life. As Resident Services Director at Aura Independent Living, I’ve seen how intentional efforts to build these relationships can transform our community. These moments turn our building into a true home.

By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we do more than plan events. We build a vibrant and supportive community where everyone can thrive. The connections we nurture make all the difference.
